An INDIAN freedom fighter from Punjab, who founded the company in 1948 after the independence in 1947. He named the Company known as ASHOK MOTORS named after his only son, in 1948 It started with assembling and Manufacturing AUSTIN CARS.

At that time ASHOK MOTORS was the youngest manufacturing company in and around Independent India and it was directly recognized by the PM of India at that period of time. It gains grip in the market and had become one of the leading Manufacturer units of AUSTIN CARS at that time

Then he realized that the market in India for Vehicles lay in Trucks and Buses, to serve the Public and not cars that served only for few. from that movement he changed the faith of the company 
and turned into the largest company in the world  in means of CV manufacture 

Saran was contemplating the Manufacture of Chassis or Motorised Public Transport and Later Forged an alliance with BRITISH LEYLAND. By the collaboration of the British Expertise and INDIAN Executives the company grew strength in the local and International Market

British LEYLAND joined in 1954 then Ashok Motors was renamed, Ashok Leyland and commercial vehicles started to roll out. Then after 21yrs, the collaboration ended in 1975 with British Leyland

In  1987, the company was taken over by a joint venture between Hinduja Group. In 2007, the Hinduja Group, NRI group, and Fiat Group. The Hinduja Group become 51% stakeholder 

In 1997 the company launched Indias first CNG bus and Developed the first hybrid electric vehicle in 2002. It launched India's first electric bus in 2016.

Now in today's view of the Market, the  ASHOK  LEYLAND is 

   $ 2nd Largest Manufacture of commercial vehicles in INDIA.

   $ 3rd largest Manufacture of buses in the world.

   $ 10th Largest manufactures of trucks in the world.

The Company has maintained its profitable track record for 60 years. In 2019 it was awarded AON best Employers for INDIA.

Every year Ashok Leyland exports about 12000 truck to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which has an 80% increase in demand YoY
